Leh (Ladakh), Sep.8 (ANI): In an endeavour to encourage youth to take part in adventure sports, the Indian Army flagged off a civilian high altitude trekking expedition on Wednesday to Siachen Glacier from Leh in Ladakh.
The main objective to organize the trek to Siachen Glacier was to showcase the efficiency with which the Indian army defended the country's borders on the world's highest battlefield.
"Main thing is to promote a spirit of adventure and to get the feel of the ice in the earth, the pleasure of getting the smell of the earth. That is what promotes tourism, tourism I will say adventure tourism," said Lt. Gen Ravi Datsane, General Officer Commanding (GOC) 14 corps, Ladakh.
While interacting with the mediaperson Lt. Gen Ravi Datsane told that if a person wants to take part in this expedition then, they have to apply to the army adventure cell and obtain a security clearance.
Lt. Gen. Ravi Dastane flagged off the twenty-five-member team on Wednesday from Leh.
The participants would be imparted specialised training till September 17, when they would halt at the Army Base camp at Siachen Glacier.
The aim of this training was to ensure that the trekkers get used to the challenging weather conditions.
Before the team returns to the Base camp, the trekkers would travel a distance of 60 kilometres and reach the Kumar Post, which is located at an altitude of 15180 feet, on September 20.
The expedition team included five female members most of the members are from Ministry of External Affairs, Defence Research and Development Organisation, Cadets of Rashtriya Military College and Military Schools, Media and Indian Mountaineering Federation. (ANI)
