Karachi, Sept 4(ANI): Pakistan Army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani could have overthrown the democratically-elected government if he had wanted to, but he had no such plans, a US diplomatic cable unveiled by whistle-blower website WikiLeaks has revealed.
The leaked cable disclosed a conversation between former US Ambassador to Pakistan, Anne Patterson, and Chief of the Army Staff (COAS) General Kayani, in which the latter expressed unhappiness over a clause in the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Bill, which was about the Pakistan Army's autonomy.
According to the document, General Kayani told the then US ambassador that he could have overthrown the government during the long march staged in March 2009 for the restoration of judiciary, if he had wanted to, but no such thing was on his mind, The Nation reports.
Moreover, the same cable also revealed that General Kayani had confessed that he was under huge pressure regarding what to say about the Kerry-Lugar-Berman Bill, as the corps commanders meeting was around the corner and he had to give them some satisfactory answers.
He even had wanted to release a statement about the same, but could not come with anything, the leaked document added. (ANI)
