Maoist party leader Baburam Bhattarai elected Prime Minister of Nepal

Kathmandu, Aug 29 (ANI): Maoist party leader Baburam Bhattarai has been elected as the Prime Minister of Nepal.

Bhattarai, who secured 340 votes, beat opponent Ram Chandra Poudel to win the election.

He vowed to complete the peace process after 10 years of civil war and reach agreement on a new constitution.

He is Nepal's fourth Prime Minister in four years, the BBC News reports.

His predecessor, Jhalanath Khanal, who represented the Unified Marxist Leninist party, had resigned earlier this month, as he was unable to forge a consensus.

Bhattarai, 57, faces the immediate challenge of agreeing to the first draft of the new constitution before the constituent assembly's expiry date, August 31.

The support of opposition parties and his own party hard-liners' would be crucial for speedy resolution of peace process.

However, Bhattarai vowed to "prove nay-sayers wrong. The country's future is very bright and we can accomplish the task of constitution-drafting and complete the peace process," he was quoted, as saying. (ANI)
