Title aspirant DAV College, Jalandhar, rallied twice to overcome the stiff challenge of CRA College, Sonepat 3-2, while Lyallpur Khalsa College, Jalandhar, edged past Municipal College, Rourkela 2-1 prevailing the dominance of Punjab teams as both of them made it to the semifinals of the 15th SAIL Nehru Champion Colleges hockey tournament played at the Shivaji Stadium here on Monday.
CRA College shot into lead in the 15th minute through Ashok Kumar in the first match of the day, while Jalandhar team levelled the score ten minutes later through Major Singh. Both the teams were locked 1-1 at the lemon-break.
On changing ends, Sonepat College again went into lead through Ashok Kumar’s second strike of the match. But soon Ajay Kumar restored parity for the Jalandhar outfit in the 41st minute.
However, Major Singh struck the match winner in the 50th minute to seal the fate of the opponents.
In the second match of the day, Lyallpur Khalsa College from Jalandhar too faced trying moments before edging past their rivals. Sunil Kujur sounded the board to draw the first blood in the 30th minute for the Rourkela team.
But the team from Orissa could not sustain their lead and lost the encounter after conceding two goals in the latter half.
Spirited Jalandhar team came from behind and scored two brilliant goals to seal the match in their favour. Jasdeep Singh struck a fine brace in the 47th and 51st minute of the game.
