Tillekeratne Dilshan’s unbeaten quick-fire 62 after opening up well with veteran Sanath Jayasuriya for a belligerent first wicket stand helped Sri Lankan team to register an eight-wicket win over India in a rain-curtailed One-day international match played at the Manuka Oval in Canberra on Tuesday.
Sri Lanka recorded their first win in the ongoing tri-series that also includes Australia. Dilshan led his team to get the revised target of 154 for two from 19 overs, with 12 balls to spare.
India made 195 for five from 29 overs but the game was curtailed again when further rain arrived during the break between the innings.
Earlier, Rohit Sharma came out with a career-best unbeaten knock of 70 to take India to a fighting total of 195-5 from the fixed 29 overs, after Sri Lanka put India into bat, since the start was delayed by more than three hours due to rain.
Jayasuriya bludgeoned the Indian seam attack while chasing the target. He was well prepared and bashed 27 runs from 13 balls that included two massive sixes and same number of boundaries before getting out to Ishant Sharma behind the wicket.
Jayasuriya made mockery of S Sreesanth’s bowling as he slammed both the sixes on his bowling
Ishant again came in to action when he took a soaring catch at mid-on to depart Kumar Sangakkara for 10 off Harbhajan Singh as Sri Lanka slipped to 69-2. But captain Mahela Jayawardene (36 not out) and man of the match Dilshan, who scored 62 in just 59 balls, hitting six boundaries and one six, held their nerves and romped Lankans home with an unbroken stand of 85 for the third wicket.
Mumbai lad Rohit's innings, which contained six boundaries and a six, had a crucial 68-run fourth-wicket partnership with skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni and. Dhoni got run out in the penultimate over off India's allotted 29 overs after scoring a rapid 31 off 26 balls.
Indian openers Virender Sehwag (14) and Sachin Tendulkar (32) added 45 for the opening wicket before getting out in an identical manner, after being caught at third man, in the eighth and ninth overs respectively. Gautam Gambhir (35) was also run out after adding 64 for the third wicket with Rohit.
Sri Lanka's off-spinner Muttiah Muralitharan hadn’t had a great outing in his 300th limited-overs international as he returned with the figures of 0-36 from his quota of five overs, while Lasith Malinga, Farveez Maharoof and Nuwan Kulasekera took one wicket each.
With this win, Sri Lanka has now six points from three matches, two adrift India and one behind Australia.
