London, August 25 (ANI): A Polish engineer working in the UK who was nicknamed 'Borat' by workmates has been awarded 2,250 pounds compensation after a tribunal found that the nickname was racist.
Adrian Ruda was "degraded and humiliated" by being linked to the sexist, mankini-wearing character played by Sacha Baron Cohen, it found.
A welder at his firm gave him the nickname in 2007 because like Kazakhstani Borat, Mr Ruda was from Eastern Europe.
Mr Ruda never objected to the name, and even entertained workmates with Borat impersonations.
But the Leeds tribunal ruled that someone who was not from Eastern Europe would not have been called 'Borat'.
"The application of the nickname violated Mr Ruda's dignity in the period in question and created for him a degrading, humiliating and defensive work environment," the Sun quoted employment judge Jonathan Whittaker, as saying.
"The majority, if not all, other employees had nicknames applied to them.
"But the examples given to the tribunal were not in any way associated with the racial or national origins of the persons in question."
The tribunal also ordered Mr Ruda's firm TEi Ltd, in Wakefield, West Yorks, to introduce a policy on workplace harassment and bullying.
But it rejected Mr Ruda's claims that he had been branded a "pig", and a "f***ing foreigner". (ANI)
