East Timor suffered a major set back after President Jose Ramos Horta was critically wounded in an attack at his residence in Dili, and Prime Minister Xanana Gusmao narrowly escaped a bid on his life in a separate attempt on Monday.
The attack was led by Alfredo Reinado, a renegade soldier who died by security forces in the gun battle.
It is reported that Horta has been shifted to a Hospital in Darwin in Australia after an emergency service was performed on him; he is stable but has to undergo surgery.
According to the doctors, the chest wounds and stomach wounds has been a matter of concern and the next 24 to 48 hours will be significant of his progress to the treatment.
Experts believe that these two murderous attempts on two prominent leaders, who had played an important role for East Timor’s independence, could renew the violence in this nation, but an emergency has been declared from Monday.
Horta has shared Noble Peace Prize in 1996 with compatriot Bishop Carlos Belo for their non violent struggle against East Timor’s sovereignty.
The Prime Minister who escaped unhurt told to the media person, “This is a serious attempt on a democratic state”. He informed that he asked the acting President Vincente Guterres to impose curfew in the capital for the initial 48 hours. Since a state of emergency had come into force from Monday evening.
Earlier this youngest nation slips in violence and chaos in 2006 after riots broke in Dili following rivalry within the military and police. Around 50 people were killed and thousands fled their homes.
Reportedly the Prime Minister asked international help and troops were deployed to lead peace keeping process.
José Ramos Horta became the president in 2007 while Gusmao was sworn in as Prime Minister.
