Kanpur/Srinagar/Haridwar/Mumbai, Aug 21 (ANI): Political leaders on Saturday criticised social activist Anna Hazare for setting deadline of August 30 for passing the civil society's version of the Jan Lokpal Bill.
The leaders mainly from Congress party and its allies argued that the legislative process is long and deadline of August 30 cannot be met if parliamentary procedures are followed.
Coal Minister Sri Prakash Jaiswal has asked Hazare to press for dialogue with government.
"There is a procedure that the Parliament follows and one has to abide by that. No matter what the bill is, there is a systematic procedure to be followed. My request to him would be that he should press for consented bill by both government and civil society instead of putting pressure for his version of the bill to be passed in Parliament," he said.
Minister of State for Communications and Information Technology Sachin Pilot said dialogue is the way for resolving the dispute between the government and the civil society representatives over the Lokpal bill.
"I respect Anna Hazare ji as a person, he is a committed Gandhian, we all know that and he is putting his views in the way he is doing it. I support the fact and the nobility of the cause but we also have to respect the sanctity of the process. So I don't think there is a clash over that but he is welcome to come and talk, welcome to give his suggestions. Whatever he is saying, the joint drafting committee was made, he was part of it, suggestions have already been brought in. If anymore suggestions, I think the best way to resolve any issue is by discussions and negotiations and no matter who the other person is, discussing each other's view is the best way to resolve issues if there are any," said Pilot.
Meanwhile, Congress leader Harish Rawat in Haridwar said Hazare should not allow opposition leaders to give his movement a political colour.
"It pains me to say that Anna Hazare's pious intentions are being misused for political purpose and they are trying to political benefits out of the movement. Hazare needs to keep check on it, I hope he does that," said Rawat.
"Anna's way of protest is wrong; it is not only undemocratic but also not Gandhian. Mahatma Gandhi or any of his followers have never set deadlines for any of their demands. What does this deadline mean, the Parliament should not debate, and parliamentary procedures don't get followed. Nobody is above the parliament or constitution," said Nationalist Congress Party spokesperson, D. P. Tripathi in Mumbai. (ANI)
