Jamshedpur, Aug 14(ANI): In order to attract visitors, zoo authorities of the Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) in Jamshedpur accorded a warm welcome five mandrill monkeys here on Saturday.

Three females and two male monkeys, ranging from eight to ten years and weighing around 35 to 40 kilograms have been imported from the Tisch Family Zoological Gardens in Israel.

Tata Steel Zoological Park (TSZP) is the only zoo in the country, to have five colourful mandrill monkeys as its inmates

A proposal regarding the exchange of animals between the two countries was sent last year.

It was pushed forward by India's apex zoological body, Central Zoo Authority.

These colourful primates are found only in few parts of Africa and these monkeys have red nostrils and lips along with blue and white stripes on the sides.

"The most unique thing about this monkey is that it is called the king of the monkeys and they are very big in size as compare to baboons. This monkey is only found in Africa," said Bipul Chakrabarti, Zoo Official.

The visitors will not get their glimpses now, as the zoo authorities want the monkeys to first get acclimatised to their new surroundings.

"This is a completely herbivores animal so at the moment we will give them apple, banana and other seasonal fruits. After a while we even plan to give them dog biscuits so that they get additional vitamins," zoo veterinarian, Manik Palit said.

The zoo authorities plan to provide them a breeding ground and would like to share these mandrill monkeys with others in future. (ANI)
