Kolkata/Midnapore, Aug.11 (ANI): West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee has expressed concern of the flood situation in her state and assured people of all possible assistance and urged them to move to safer locations.
She said her government is undertaking all possible measures to tackle the natural disaster and is monitoring the situation from time to time.
"We are trying to repair the bridges and some embankments damaged in the rainy season. Generally, these are repaired during the winter season. We are monitoring the situation .Reports are being sent from the districts time to time. The disaster management is also ready. The government would try its best. It is a natural disaster but the government would work with the people hand in hand. I will ask people not to panic and should move to the safer places and not take any risk," she said.
Banerjee further announced sanction of 880 million rupees for the people who were affected by devastating cyclone Aila back in 2009.
"It was decided earlier that Aila affected people whose houses were damaged would get Rs. 10,000, and people whose houses were partially damaged would get Rs. 2,000. However, even after three years of the disaster, people have got 50 percent of the compensation and they have not received the other 50 percent as yet," she said.
Areas like Devipur, Sujapur and Kalaha are heavily affected, while 300-400 hectares of agricultural land was also destroyed.
Nearly 30,000 locals were affected as rains lashed out Jalpaiguri and other districts of the state.
In the past week, central and northeastern regions of India have received rainfall above normal.
Rain bearing clouds have been hovering over parts of western Himalayan region, Saurashtra, Kutch, western Madhya Pradesh, southern Orissa, extreme southern Peninsula, Bay of Bengal, Andaman Sea and southeast Arabian Sea.(ANI)
