UK Sikhs, Muslims guarding religious places as riot intensifies in London

London , Wed, 10 Aug 2011 ANI

London, Aug 10 (ANI): A group of Sikh and Muslim men were found guarding temples, and mosques respectively, as riots in London intensified.

In Southall, west London, hundreds of Sikh men stood guard outside their temple and mounted street patrols, armed with baseball bats, while Muslim men were seen guarding a East London mosque to defend it and repelled looters from a bank, The Telegraph reports.

In Eltham, south east London, a crowd of 200 men gathered in the streets, promising to protect their neighbourhood from looters and arsonists following rioting in nearby Lewisham and Woolwich.

"We won't stand for it. If anyone wants to come down here and start looting tonight, let them try - we'll be ready for them. We're here to protect the town. What went on last night was a disgrace. It shouldn't be allowed. We're taking a stand," one of them said.

However, concerns have been raised that some far-right groups were seeking to take advantage of the disorder.

Earlier, British citizens had savaged London mayor Boris Johnson for failing to protect the public during the rioting that has been going on for the past five days.

A businesswoman, whose hair salon in Clapham Junction, was smashed up by young thugs, compared the orgy of violence to 'a war movie'.

"We were in complete shock. They were mocking us from outside. We were left completely terrified. We could hear them smashing everything. The noise was atrocious, you could hear them cheering each other, screaming. They were young, very young, 12 to 15 years old. I was shaking for two hours afterwards. It's outrageous. This is a war zone. It's like a scene from a war movie," she added. (ANI)
