Tennessee (US), Aug.8 (ANI): Kimberly Vaughn, the widow of 30-year-old martyred Navy Seal Aaron Carson Vaughn of Tennessee saw television reports of the helicopter downed in Afghanistan on Saturday morning, and knew about the tragedy before her doorbell rang.
But she says that Aaron loved his job and was always the team man, ready for the final sacrifice.
The Daily Mail quoted her, as saying: "He loved his job. There was no way, even if you could tell him, that this would have happened he would have done it anyway. All those men (Navy Seals) are like that. They're selfless."
Recalling her last conversation with her husband, Kimberley said: "It was actually a great conversation - probably just about time before he went out to work that night. We got to tell each other we loved each other, so it was a great conversation to have."
Soon after, the tragedy came to her doorstep.
"I thought, oh, hopefully it's just a neighbour, and as I rounded the stairs, I saw the men in uniform and I just fell to my knees. There's no preparing for it. It's something you see in the movies. It's not something you're supposed to live through," Kimberley said of the Navy officers who told her that her husband had been killed in action.
Aaron was the first Special Operations soldier to be identified in the devastating crash that killed 38 on Friday.
Apart from Kimberley, he leaves behind two children - two-year-old son Reagan and two-month-old daughter Chamberlyn.
The Chinook chopper in which Aaron was travelling was on a mission to back up U.S. Army Rangers, who had come under fire by Afghan insurgents in the area, military official said.
The team had completed their mission of subduing the attackers, and was departing in the helicopter when a rocket-propelled grenade hit it. (ANI)
