Washington, Aug 5 (ANI): Indian-origin Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has called the deal to raise the debt ceiling a mistake, insisting that a balanced-budget amendment would provide the brute force to get spending under control.
"If you want to be popular with the editorial boards, nothing will make you as popular with the intelligentsia in America as 'compromise. I have found in government that it pays to be stubborn. It pays to stick to your guns," Politico quoted Jindal, as saying.
Although he acknowledged that the debt deal was a mistake, he admitted that attacking President Barack Obama would be a foolish act.
"'Hating' President Barack Obama is foolish, but defeating President Obama is absolutely critical for us as a party and for our country," he added.
He also cautioned the Republicans that attacking Obama could lead the party to pay a heavy price, similar to the ways when Democrats attacked President George W. Bush in the lead-up to the 2004 election, hurting their credibility with independent voters.
"You may recall that many of the leftists in our country spent eight years hating President Bush," he said, adding: "They put their ignorance on display for all to see with shrill, absurd and nasty rhetoric. We must not mimic that shallow approach."
Meanwhile, a USA Today/Gallup poll has found that nearly half of Americans, 46 percent, believe the debtceiling plan, which has already been made into a law, will actually make the economy worse.
Earlier, the bill was passed in the Senate and signed into law by President Barack Obama. (ANI)
