Malda, Aug 4 (ANI): Over 20 villages were flooded after a breach in embankment of Fulohar River in West Bengal's Malda District.
People were stranded outside their houses as the river waters flooded the villages situated on the river bank and low-lying areas.
"The ring band (embankment) in Debipur area got breached yesterday due to which some low-lying areas have got flooded. We have also got one Kalvat (mud-bridge) breached, due to which the communication to 30 villages is affected. The 30 villages are having a population of about 3500 families," said Rajesh Singha, Magistrate of Malda District.
"We have arranged for boats to restore communication and in case of any untoward incident, we are fully prepared with all the materials. If water rises further, we will take appropriate action to shift people to relief camps at the appropriate places," he added.
"For the last 10-15 days, we have not had proper food to eat. Even if we want to go back home, where shall we go? We cannot make food and besides there is no place to cook. We are facing a lot of tensions but will the government help us or not?", said Mina Pahar, a local.
Areas like Devipur, Sujapur and Kalaha were heavily affected, while 300-400 hectares of agricultural land was also destroyed. (ANI)
