Karnataka Governor sanctions criminal prosecution of Yeddyurappa

Bangalore, Wed, 03 Aug 2011 ANI

Bangalore, Aug 3 (ANI): Karnataka Governor HR Bhardwaj on Wednesday sanctioned the prosecution of outgoing chief minister BS Yeddyurappa for corruption.

Bhardwaj has accepted the report on illegal mining that indicts Yeddyurappa for misusing his public office, a Raj Bhavan communique said.

Prepared by retried Supreme Court Justice Santosh Hegde while he was the ombudsman or Lokayukta of Karnataka, the report forced a reluctant Yeddyurappa to resign over the weekend.

The communique further said the Governor, the competent authority under the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, took the decision after having carefully examined the report, along with relevant annexure, with reference to provisions of the Karnataka Lokayukta Act, 1994 and Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.

He has also noted that the Lokayukta may take further necessary action through the Lokayukta Police. The decision of the Competent Authority has been forwarded to the Registrar, Karnataka Lokayukta, for placing it before the Lokayukta of Karnataka.

Along with Yeddyurappa, 400 firms and 787 people had been implicated in a web of corruption involving mining, transport, customs and shipping officials, leading to hundreds of thousands of tonnes of iron ore going missing from mines across the state.

Several senior officials with Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), including the state tourism minister Janardhana Reddy, were also named in the report.

Bowing down to the diktat of Karnataka's ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Yeddyurappa formally stepped down and tendered his resignation to Bhardwaj on Sunday. (ANI)
