Jorhat, Aug 3 (ANI): Activists of Asom Jatiyatabadi Yuba Chhatra Parishad (AJYP), a youth organisation, took out a torch rally to protest against illegal Bangladeshi migration and the rise of prices of essential commodities in Assam.
As the problem of illegal migration continues and spreads to tribal belts of Assam, the protesting students demanded to declare Assam as an indigenous tribal state.
The protestors took to the streets holding torches and banners and demanded immediate action from the state and central governments to stop this menace.
"The problem of illegal migrants in Assam should be tackled by finding out the migrants first. The national census should look into this matter seriously but the state and the federal governments have not shown any interest in this matter. So, we demand that the national census look into this matter immediately and make efforts to throw out the illegal migrants from Assam," said Ritesh Hazarika, General Secretary of AJYCP, Jorhat unit.
The youth organization also raised their voice against the price rise of essential commodities and construction of mega dams in upstream of Brahmaputra River.
According to the protestors, the construction of the dam would severely affect the farmers of Majuli, the largest river island, who depend on the upstream water of Brahmaputra River in Arunachal Pradesh.
The influx of Bangladeshi migrants has posed severe threat to the existence and identity of the indigenous people of the state. (ANI)
