New Delhi, Aug 1 (ANI): The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day on Monday after obituary references, the opening day of monsoon session of Parliament.
Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar read out the obituary references. Earlier kumar welcomed a delegation from Sri Lnaka led by that country Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa.
There was an attempt to disrupt proceeding, which were silenced by Kumar.
Earlier, before he headed into Parliament, Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh said: "This is our sincere desire that this session should move smoothly, that Parliament should debate and discuss all issues of national importance. The government is quite prepared for any subject which the opposition would like to be taken up."
"I would also hope that there are matters which are in the courts, those are best left to the courts to decide and overall, we are hoping that this session will be a productive and constructive session," he said
"My appeal to the opposition is let us unite on this occasion to tackle jointly, collectively the major problems that are our nation is faced with," he added
The session, which started today, is expected to be stormy with the opposition raring to have a go at the government on several issues.
The NDA wants to raise the 2G scam afresh after former telecom minister A Raja tried to drag in the Prime Minister's Office (PMO) and the then Finance Minister P Chidambaram.
The session is also crucial as nearly 80 bills are to be introduced for discussions. But the government's emphasis is on anti-corruption bills like the Lokpal Bill.
The judicial accountability Bill is also in the pipeline for which the government has kept the judiciary out of Lokpal Bill.
The Opposition also wants to debate the black money issue, price rise, unrest over demand for Telangana statehood, farmers' protest over land acquisition, Maoist violence, rail accidents and the mismanagement of Air India.
Issues like FDI in retail and farmers' agitation on land acquisition could see the Left and the Right making a common cause in Parliament.
The ruling party is expected to counter the BJP on the issue of corruption by pointing fingers at the illegal mining scam in Karnataka.
The Monsoon session is scheduled for five weeks. (ANI)
