British National Health Service in its new provision has set to give a protective coverage to the UK based doctors by not allowing the doctors from outside the European Union to get training in Britain from next month.
Health Secretary Alan Johnson said that Britain wants to be self sufficient with its doctor and indicated to end dependence on foreign doctors. He said, “It can cost up to £250,000 to train a U.K. medical student. With the increase in U.K. medical schools we are moving to a policy of self-sufficiency. If U.K. medical graduates cannot access specialist training because of a large number of applicants from outside Europe, then it is only right we should consider what needs to be done.”
British health secretary Alan Johnson said, “Doctors from overseas have played an invaluable role in the NHS for many years and will continue to do so. They have helped us fill key skill-shortage areas such as psychiatry, obstetrics, gynaecology and paediatrics. But as the number of UK medical school graduates expands, there should be less need to rely on overseas doctors for these specialties.”
According to the new rule the doctors will be able to work in UK in non- training job but they would not be allowed to advance their careers as they can not join post graduate courses. The new law will be implemented from April 1 and the migrants who want to apply under the new system will have nothing but disappointment. Also the migrants with high qualification will be barred from applying for higher posts.
But the estimated 10,000 non-European doctors mainly from India will not be affected.
British Association of Physicians of Indian Origin (BAPIO), the main body representing Indian doctors in Britain said, “The new Home Office rules that will make it clear to international medical graduates (IMGs) currently overseas who are planning to come to the UK that it would be difficult for them to obtain postgraduate training here while protecting the rights of those IMGs who were already in the UK.”
Dr. Ramesh Mehta, BAPIO president, supported the rule for it was necessary to regulate the entry of international graduates compared to the limited training places.
“We have been lobbying for the last five years asking the government to take action to limit the number of international medical graduates entering the U.K. This is necessary since there are limited places for post-graduate training. This is in the best interests of both U.K. doctors and IMGs,” he said.
Though BAPIO has welcomed this new rule British Medical Association has raised doubts on the prospects of overseas doctors.
