New Delhi, July 24 (ANI): Expressing disappointment over the removal of Ghulam Mohammed Vastanvi, as vice-chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband University, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Sunday said academics should be above religion and politics.
"His removal is a disappointment, and I am sure it is just not disappointment for the people of Gujarat, for the people of the country, for BJP but over all, all those people who believe in development. It is a disappointment for them. We believe that academics should be above religion and politics," said BJP spokesperson Rajiv Pratap Rudy.
Rajiv Pratap Rudy further said Vastanvi was removed for speaking the truth.
"He was not removed on charges of corruption. He was not removed on the charges of incompetence or for that matter any other matter. He was possibly removed for speaking a truth --- undeniable truth-a truth about Gujarat which has not been denied even by the Planning Commission," said Rudy.
"The development has taken place in Gujarat was statement made by him and minorities, including Muslims are the beneficiary of that development, was the reason for his removal," he added.
Vastanvi, who was criticized for praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi in February this year, was removed as the vice chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband University on Sunday.
The decision was taken at a meeting attended by a three-member Majlis-e-Shoora or the governing council of Darul Uloom.
The governing council constituted a three-member committee, comprising Mufti Mazoor Ahmad from Kanpur, Mufti Mohammad Ismail from Malegaon and Maulana Mohammad Ibrahim from Chennai.
Vastanvi, who hails from Surat and was elected vice-chancellor on January 10, was subjected to protests from seminary students after saying that Muslims should forget the communal pogrom of 2002 and move on and that the community did not face discrimination in Gujarat-led by Modi. (ANI)
