Kochi, July 22 (ANI): Largest container vessel, Maersk Sembawang, with a length of 318.79 metres and a capacity of 6,478 TEUs (Twenty-foot equivalent units) arrived at the Vallarpadam port in Kerala.
Talking to mediapersons, Senior VP and Managing Director of DP World Subcontinent (a branch of DP World), Anil Singh said that the International Container Transshipment Terminal (ICTT) with its crucial location in the subcontinent region had emerged as one of the most important ports in India's growing trade.
"It's a very proud moment for us. Like I said earlier that it was a dream and that dream has been realised and I hope that we would see much bigger vessels coming into Kochi and this would become the best port on the Indian subcontinent," said Singh.
ICTT operated by DP World (Dubai Ports World, one of the leading organisations in international marine terminal operations and development, logistics and related services), welcomed the advent of the largest ever container vessel at the port.
DP World won the contract in a public auction in the year 2004 to operate the Rajiv Gandhi Container Terminal. Also, it would be developing the container at the transshipment Terminal located at the Vallarpadam port.
The captain of the ship, Vinod Kumar, who hails from Kochi, told reporters that it was a proud moment to arrive at the port.
"It was really tough initially but later, you know, we just accustomed to the currents and the winds. It was quite easy and comfortable to come alongside this port, even though the wind was strong outside due to the monsoon. I never felt any discomfort on my arrival here," said Kumar.
The earlier largest container ship, which reached the Chennai port, was also a Maersk Line vessel, the Maersk Kalamata with a length of 303.83 metres and had a capacity of 6,416 TEUs. (ANI)
