Agartala, July 15 (ANI): Women in Tripura are now taking big strides towards financial independence by taking employment in coir industry.
About 30 underprivileged women are working on new machinery and making coir at the Indiranagar Coir Cluster.
They believe they can bring about a change in their fortunes and are determined to do so.
"We have learned this craft with the help of the coir board and we can now make ropes and mats. This gives us a good income with which we can take care of our families," said Sima Chakraborty, a worker
"I have been making these carpets for the last 5-6 years. Today I earn a decent amount, which is an additional income for my family," said Sampa Debnath, another worker
The women working here are imparted regular training in trade skills and professional competency.
"The coir board arranged for our basic training in Kerala in the production of various coir products. Now here at Indranagar coir cluster different self-help groups mainly consisting of women are working and earning well from it," said Dilip Debnath, master trainer.
The Indiranagar coir unit started off as a training centre in 2001 and over a period of time it has transformed into a manufacturing unit. Products made from it are not only sold in the northeast region but all across the country.
The board earned Rs 806 crores from export and has set an target of Rs 2,000 crore for the 12th plan period ending in 2012-2017.
Today there are many self-help groups and communities in the northeast that are working towards empowering women.
Government organizations like Nedfi provide micro finance to these groups while flagship projects like MGNREGA, Swarnjayanti Gram Rozgar Yojna, Indira Mahila Yojna and many others also help generate employment opportunities for women in the region. (ANI)
