Guwahati, July 15 (ANI): While most militant groups in the northeast are talking with the government for a peaceful settlement, there are some who are still engaged in violent activities in an effort to create instability in the region.
On July 10, a powerful explosion ripped long stretches of tracks and led to the derailment of the Guwahati-Puri Express near Ghagrapara in Assam's Rangia district.
The explosion was triggered using an Improvised Explosive Device (IED).
Earlier, the anti talk faction of National Democratic front of Bodoland (NDFB) was suspected to be behind the attack but later Adivasi Peoples Army; a small insurgent group operating in the region took the responsibility for the attack.
"Insurgency has become a business for many outfits in the northeast region. When big groups are in talks with the government, discussions can only be held on issues related with masses, not on personal interests," said Ravi Shankar Ravi, Editor, Assam Purvoday.
"But some members of the negotiating outfit who want to make money break away and form small splinter groups. They carry extortions and blasts. In my opinion these groups should be seriously dealt with," he added
After United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) and National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) came forward for negotiations with the government it was believed that the dark phase of militancy had come to an end. But it seems there are some militant groups that do not want peace and normalcy in the region.
On June 17, Guwahati Police averted a major blast after they defused a bomb at the Guwahati railway station.
The bomb was planted in a bogie of the Kanchanjunga express that arrived in Guwahati from Kolkata. (ANI)
