NASA's intergalactic musical mission to awake aliens

New Delhi, Tue, 05 Feb 2008 NI Wire

NASA in a very unusual fashion is on a musical mission by beaming the Beatles song literally across the universe. The day Feb 04 too marked the 40th anniversary of the popular 1960’s band Beatles and hence the day is now dedicated as the “Across The Universe Day” as the whole cosmos now listen the famous classics.

NASA has transmitted the Beatles tune from a satellite antenna directly into the space by the Deep Space Network. The network transmitted the song to 431 light years away to the North Star in an effort to alert extra-terrestrial life in the whole universe.

With this Beatles became the first to have their music tuned in space. It was a an effort to celebrate 40th anniversary of the song, the 45th anniversary of NASA's Deep Space Network, and the 50th anniversary of National Aeronautics and Space Agency.

The idea came from Martin Lewis, a Los Angeles-based Beatles historian, who then got permission from McCartney, Yoko Ono, Lennon's widow, and the two companies that own the rights to Beatles' music.

In November 2005, Beatles music was used by NASA in which McCartney performed “Good Day Sunshine” in a concert that was transmitted to the international space station. "Here Comes the Sun," "Ticket to Ride" and "A Hard Day's Night" are among other Beatles' songs that have been played to wake astronaut crews in orbit.

The Beatles

The Beatles is one of the most famous and all time favourite English popular bands whose members were John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr.

They produced over 40 singles and albums that set record and most of them are considered as number one. Their innovative music in 60’s and 70’s set the future trend of popular music as well as a strong impact on Western social and cultural revolutions.

The Rolling Stone, primarily a music and popular culture magazine in their website has described the impact of Beatles as incalculable that changed the standard of rock & role music. The Beatles inaugurated the era of self-contained bands and forever centralized pop, the magazine added in artist’s biography segment.
