New Delhi, July 6 (ANI): Senior Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Rajnath Singh on Wednesday ruled out the possibility of his party having an alliance with the Mayawati-led Bahujan Samaj Party in the state of Uttar Pradesh
Speaking with ANI in an exclusive interview here, Singh, referring to the forthcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, said: "We will never do an allaince with the BSP. It (not forming an alliance) is a decison by the (BJP's) core group. We have experimented once, which failed. There will be no allaince with any party."
It maybe recalled that the BJP and the BSP had an alliance in Uttar Pradesh in 2002, when the National Democratic Alliance (1998-2004) was in power at the Centre.
It was then seen as an extraordinary power-sharing political experiement, but one which observers and analysts then said would collapse because of the BJP's dominant position in Uttar Pradesh at that time.
They cited three reasons that could lead to a parting of ways within six months.
First:That Mayawati and her mentor Kanshi Ram would not concede the chief ministership of Uttar Pradesh to the BJP's Kalyan Singh after six months.
Secondly, that the experiment would collapse if the right-wing Vishwa Hindu Parishad went ahead with its campaign to liberate the controversial Kashi and Mathura temples.
And third, doubts were raised about the Mayawati-Kalyan Singh combine being in a position to fight the corruption, criminalisation and atrocities against the weaker sections in UP with single-minded devotion.
As events later panned out, the predictions of the experts came true.
When Singh was asked by ANI who would be the BJP's chief ministerial candidate for next year's assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, he said: "The decison will be taken by the BJP Parliamentary Board." By Naveen Kapoor (ANI)
