Rajkot, July 4 (ANI): Prison authorities in Rajkot, Gujarat, have introduced special training modules along with counseling sessions for prisoners.
On the suggestion of the Gujarat home department, inmates are given vocational training of their choice under the aegis of the Saurashtra University.
Saurashtra University Vice-Chancellor Kamlesh Joshipuria said the objective of the program was to help inmates to earn a decent living.
"For the welfare of the prisoners of Gujarat, a special initiative has been kicked off by the state government and Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police of the prison P C Thakur. From a psychological point of view, this step would help in reforming their behaviour," said Joshipuria.
Joshipura added that vocational training and proper counselling would also help the inmates to synchronise in the society, once they are released from the jail.
The basic plan of vocational courses (like tailoring, baking, short-hand and even technical courses electrical and mechanical departments) was discussed in a meeting, attended by the Jail Superintendents of Rajkot, Bhavnagar, Morbi and Porbandar (cities of Gujarat state) and heads of various faculties at Saurashtra University.
In order to ascertain the interests of the prisoners, jail authorities would also undertake a survey and accordingly design a curriculum as per needs of the inmates. Curriculums may vary from jail to jail, depending on the interest shown by the inmates. There would be special batch for the women prisoners from the home science department.
Prisoners are happy with the kind of move taken by the authorities. Jairaj Singh, one of the prisoners, has been in jail for the past 15 years. He believes that the initiative would certainly aid in enhancing the life of the prisoners.
"Since we are prisoners and have been isolated from the society for a long time, so we don't have any objective after stepping out of the jail. Hence this educational programme is a boon to all of us. This is our fortune and now we would study hard and hold a degree, which would help us to start a fresh life," said Singh.
With the help of the psychology, sociology and law departments, a counseling session on a regular basis has also been included as a part of the curriculum. The main objective behind this counseling session is building the mental status of the prisoners and helping them to escape from any kind of guilt, shame as well as sharpening their social skills by the time they step out.
The training would be imparted in modules with duration of two to six months, with the help of students and experts. (ANI)
