Mumbai, July 2 (ANI): Kannada actress Maria Susairaj, who was convicted for destruction of evidence in the murder case of television executive Neeraj Grover, is likely to walk free from Mumbai's Byculla Jail on Saturday for having already served her three-year sentence awarded by a court during the trial.
A Mumbai Session Court on Friday sentenced Maria Susairaj to three years, while her boyfriend Emile Jerome Mathew, a Navy Lieutenant, was sentenced to 10 years in prison in the Neeraj Grover murder case.
Maria has already served a sentence of three years and therefore will not have to be imprisoned. She will now walk free.
The court's judgement came a day after it held that the killing of Neeraj Grover was not an act of premeditated murder and absolved Maria Susairaj and Emile Jerome of the murder charge.
Susairaj has been convicted for destruction of evidence under Indian Penal Code Section 201, while Jerome has been convicted for culpable homicide not amounting to murder under Section 304 (Part 1).
The prosecution, however, failed to prove intent to murder for Jerome.
The duo was arrested in May 2008 for Grover's brutal murder.
Matthew allegedly killed Grover, as he suspected Maria Susairaj of having an affair with him. Grover was murdered in Maria's apartment in suburban Mumbai on May 7.
Maria and Jerome allegedly chopped his body into several pieces, put into two bags and drove to Manor in neighbouring Thane District, where they burnt the body to dispose it. (ANI)
