Delayed arrival monsoon distresses Surat farmers

Surat , Sun, 26 Jun 2011 ANI

Surat (Gujarat), June 26 (ANI): Farmers in Gujarat's Surat District are anguished about the delay in the arrival of the monsoon.

The monsoon season in India generally begins from June and runs till September, and the lack of rain, has resulted in huge cro-related losses to the farmers..

Kevin Patel, a farmer, said that by this time farmers are harvesting their crops, but this year, even their sowed seeds have not picked up yet.

He also said that farmers have not been able to pay their labourers because of the poor returns from their fields.

"There is no rainfall. We are not able to decide how we should harvest our crop. We are cultivating our fields but we do not know whether there will be rainfall or not," said Patel.

"We are facing problems due to no rainfall. We are sowing seeds without water and waiting for rainfall. All the labourers are sitting at home only," said Manju Rathore, a labourer.

According to meteorological department officials, monsoon has arrived in some parts of the state. However, as compared to previous years, it is yet to make a significant impact.

Statistics reveal that last year (2010) in the month of June, crops were sown on 1.33 million hectares of land. This year seeds were merely sown on 0.59 million hectares of land during the 'Kharif' season.

As per the official statistics, seeds have been sowed in 43.50 million hectares of land in the 'Kharif' season from 2008 to 2010.

The Kharif crop is usually sown at the beginning of the first rains, after the arrival of the southwest monsoon season in the state.

According to the reports, sowing of grains, pulses, oilseeds and cash crops has been significantly lower this year as compared to previous years due to the delayed monsoon. (ANI)
