Healthy eating, exercise, right sleep patterns vital to curb child obesity

Washington, June 25 (ANI): A new report from the Institute of Medicine has suggested the imperatives for curbing the shooting rate of obesity among America's young children.

It noted that limiting television and other media use, encouraging infants and young children in schools to spend more time in physical activities and promoting healthy sleeping practices are vital to keep children in shape.

Although, the recommendations are directed to policymakers and health care and child-care providers, parents could also take tips from these professionals in promoting healthy habits in the house as well.

"Contrary to the common perception that chubby babies are healthy babies and will naturally outgrow their baby fat, excess weight tends to persist," said Leann Birch, director, Center for Childhood Obesity Research, Pennsylvania State University, University Park.

"This is a national concern because weight-related conditions such as diabetes and high blood pressure once occurred almost exclusively in adults but are now occurring at rising rates among teens and young adults.

Child care providers, health professionals, and policymakers can be helpful partners to parents in reducing obesity risk by creating healthy environments and implementing positive practices during the crucial early years of development," Birch added.

The report also suggested that all childcare facilities and preschools should be required to follow the meal patterns established by the federal Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP).

The CACFP reflects age-appropriate amounts of sugar, salt, fat and necessary nutrients.

It also promotes including fruits, vegetables and whole grains in kids' diet, in addition to providing guidance on appropriate portion sizes for children at different ages. (ANI)
