New Delhi, June 19(ANI): Congress President and United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Chairperson Sonia Gandhi has replied to veteran social activist Anna Hazare's letter in which he claimed that Congress party leaders and ministers were "telling lies" to defame him.
Hazare had also said that the politicians were trying to mislead people on the Lokpal Bill.
Gandhi said that her stand on the issue remains the same as mentioned in her earlier letter written to the veteran social activist on April 19. She had said that she was not in favour of smear campaigns.
"I received your letter dated June 9, 2011. Since I was not in Delhi I could not reply to your letter. In the meantime, you have also made it public. I will get information in this regard," Gandhi wrote in the letter.
"As far as the questions about the issues raised in the letter are concerned, I have already made my views clear in my letter dated April 19, 2011," she added.
Earlier, Hazare, in the letter, had requested Gandhi to ensure that responsible leaders from the Congress party "should not resort to character assassination".
"If the Congress party has any concrete evidence, please make it public," Hazare had written in the letter.
He had also criticized Congress General Secretary Janardhan Dwivedi for his statement that the social activist was a "mask" of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).
"If the responsible leaders in the party and government resort to spreading lies, it is not good for the future of the country. Many senior leaders in your party have said that I am a mask of BJP and RSS," Hazare had written.
"In the 73 years of my life, I have never gone close to any party or front because there is corruption everywhere," he had added. (ANI)
