Brit female officer trains Afghan women to become fighter pilots

London , Sat, 18 Jun 2011 ANI

London, Jun 18 (ANI): A female British Royal Air Force officer is training a team of four Afghan women to become fighter pilots.

Emma Atkinson, 22, is the first woman trainer at Kabul's Thunder Lab flight school, where Afghan trainees learn the basics of piloting on computer simulators.

"I'm very impressed. My Afghan female officers really want to work hard and succeed," The Sun quoted Atkinson, as saying.

Teaching Afghan women to be pilots is a massive step forward in a country that under the Taliban treated women like slaves. Education for girls was banned and women were forbidden to work or even leave home without a male escort.

Flying Officer Emma, the RAF's youngest female pilot, said the old prejudices have yet to be totally eradicated.

"The girls get a few unpleasant comments from men, so this is tough for them," she said.

The four trainees will go to America soon for full pilot training - before returning to help shape a new Afghanistan. (ANI)
