Cape Town, June 16(ANI): The man who claims Brit-Indian millionaire Shrien Dewani hired him to help kill his wife during their honeymoon in Cape Town last year has been quizzed in jail over having accepted a "bribe" to change his original statement.
Taxi driver Zola Tongo had claimed in a plea bargain that Dewani offered him cash to arrange the two hitmen who shot dead Anni in a fake carjacking.
He has been sentenced to 18 years in jail for murder, kidnapping, robbery with aggravating circumstances and perverting the course of justice.
However, South African officials have questioned the 31-year-old in prison 50 miles from Cape Town amid fears that he had been paid to claim he had been pressured into making a false confession, The Sun reports.
It is not known if any bribe had actually been made or attempted and there is no suggestion that Dewani would have been involved.
South African police claim that Dewani paid the men to kill Anni during the staged hijacking in November last year.
Dewani denies any wrongdoing and is fighting extradition.
The two hitmen, Xolile Mngeni and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, are charged with murder, kidnapping and robbery with aggravating circumstances. (ANI)
