Darjeeling, June 15 (ANI): The Gorkha Janmukti Morcha (GJMM) has stated that the memorandum of settlement (MoS) with state government would be signed only if the party's demands tallied with the proposals of the Centre and the state.
"Nothing has been finalised yet as we need to study and analyse the proposals of the Centre and the state and see that they tally with the agreements reached with us earlier (in the previous tripartite meetings). We will then make it public and will sign the agreement only after we get a no-objection-certificate from the hill people," Morcha president Bimal Gurung said.
He also said the agreement would not come through until Dooars and Terai regions are taken into consideration in the MoS.
He further said that these two regions would be represented in the meeting with the state government.
Explaining the logic behind accepting the new administrative unit, Gurung said: "The state government is saying they will solve the hill problem. If they want to, let them solve the problem. Why should we stop them? Whatever may be the outcome, we will not drop the demand for Gorkhaland or let it be diluted by any agreement."
The state government and the GJMM had recently agreed on a new administrative set up to resolve the long pending issue of separate Gorkhaland state, after which West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee made the announcement that the decade-long Darjeeling issue had finally been resolved.
A renewed demand for a separate Gorkhaland region, which would include Darjeeling and some contiguous areas of Jalpaiguri District, has created fresh turmoil over the past few months.
