Guwahati, June 13 (ANI): Union Law Minister M. Veerappa Moily has announced the committee on electoral reforms will submit the draft proposal to the government either in the monsoon session of the Parliament or latest by December.
After chairing the seventh regional consultation meeting on electoral reforms in Guwahati on Sunday, Moily said that relevant issues were discussed in the meeting and the committee will submit its draft proposal by December.
"We are going forward in consultation with the Election Commission of India, particularly the amendments, which will be introduced possibly, if not in the Monsoon Session of Parliament at least before December," he added.
"We should ensure that the constitutional aspirations are put in place through this unique experiment of regional consultation and we shall form a bill," he said.
Stressing the need for comprehensive electoral reforms, Moily said there is an urgent need for de-criminalization of politics by preventing criminals from entering the corridors of power.
Speaking on the occasion, Chief Election Commissioner S.Y. Quraishi said the proposed reforms would be in tune the pulse of the people.
"The proposal is we should find ways to debar criminals from being able to contest election. Another set of proposal is about financing of elections and third on is about conduct and management of elections," he added. (ANI)
