Cameron wins row with Nick Clegg over crackdown on Islamist extremism

London , Sun, 05 Jun 2011 ANI

London, June 4 (ANI): British Prime Minister David Cameron has managed to win over a long cabinet debate over multiculturalism, with reports saying that the government would unveil a strict strategy to tackle Islamist extremism.

The Guardian quoted Home Office sources as saying that Cameron has quashed Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg's argument for a more tolerant attitude to Muslim groups by insisting that violent extremism develops within the ideology of non-violent extremism.

This approach would be outlined by Home Secretary Theresa May while declaring the government's counter-terrorism strategy on Tuesday.

The 'Prevent strategy' would stress on a broader definition of extremism that will be extended beyond groups condoning violence to those preach non-violence, but whose views like the 'advocacy of sharia law', fail to "reflect British mainstream values".

"There will be a direct challenge to these [non-violent] groups," a Home Office source said.

The Prevent review has been delayed for five months because of disagreements within the coalition cabinet.

Clegg was backed by Attorney General Dominic Grieve, Tory chairman Baroness Warsi, and others including Charles Farr, the head of the office of security and extremism, in arguing that it was necessary to distinguish between violent and non-violent extremism.

However, the strategy has now been made to warn Muslim groups that they would only receive public funding under certain conditions, like the groups would be allocated funding on short-term projects only when they confirm that it would not be used to promote or support extremist views.

"Under the old Prevent strategy we sprayed a lot of cash willy-nilly and the new strategy is opposed to that," the source added. (ANI)
