Historical coin exhibition being organized in Coimbatore

Coimbatore, June 4(ANI): An exhibition on historical coins and currency bills is being held in Coimbatore, Tamil Nadu.

 

Coins dating from the times of rulers like Aurangzeb (1618-1707), Tipu Sultan (1750-1799), as well as from the erstwhile princely states of Baroda, Bikaner and Hyderabad, are on display.

 

Also on display are currency notes from British India and Portuguese India.

 

The exhibition, organized by the Coimbatore Coin Society, aims at creating awareness about the history of India, and also encourages coin collection as a hobby.

 

"The National Coin Exhibition is being hosted in Coimbatore and it will conclude on Sunday. Main participants are from New Delhi, Kolkata, Haryana and West Bengal. The main display in the exhibition is ancient coins, medieval coins, stamps, coins, gold coins and bank notes," said Sampath Kumar, president of Coimbatore Coin Association.

 

Hundreds of visitors from across the country are also flocking to the exhibition.

 

"I am fond of collecting coins since my childhood and it is my hobby. In this exhibition, there is collection of Indian, foreign currency and any other stock. I have come from Mumbai to Coimbatore for this exhibition," said Nikita, a young visitor.

 

Pradeep Kothari, another visitor, said: "I have India's biggest coin collection department and do all these collections. I want people in India to seek knowledge about all Indian coins which can be a good business and also do this job of collecting coins."

 

Currency notes dating from 1917 to 1945, and belonging to the era of King George V and King George VI are a major attraction for the visitors.

 

The first 100 rupee note and 50 rupee note can also been seen at the exhibition. (ANI)
