India’s tennis sensation Sania Mirza has touched new heights as she has been crowned as Asia’s number one player after she went three rungs up in the latest WTA rankings released on Monday.
Sania overtook Chinese ace Na Li in the WTA rankings as the former is now at the 29th position after her third-round appearance at the Australian Open. Sania earned three spots rise to the 29th position with a total of 931 WTA points to become Asia's novel ‘numero uno’ player.
Meanwhile, Na Li dropped to the 32nd position in the latest rankings. The 21-year-old Hyderabadi lass lost to Wimbledon champion Venus Williams in the third round match of the season's Grand Slam opener.
Sania’s life has been the part and parcel of controversies, injuries and inconsistent form but the gritty Mirza proved her critics wrong time and again with her scintillating performance.
It is up to Sania now that how long she will be able to sustain this Asia’s No. 1 crown over her head. What all she has to do is to continue with her match winning performance at the international level.
Sania had a dream run in the just concluded Australian Open as she made the third round of the women's singles and doubles event with local favourite Alicia Molik, besides reaching the mixed doubles finals paring up with compatriot Mahesh Bhupathi.
The duo’s hopes of creating history suffered a setback as they lost to fifth seeded pair of Tiantian Sun and Nenad Zimonjic in the mixed doubles final of Australian Open 2008.
The Sun- Zimonjic duo defeated the unseeded Indian counterparts in straight sets 7-6, 6-4 in less than an hour and a half.
