May 28: The two bitter opponents and arch rivals since 1979, U.S. and the Iran will come to the tables for negotiations. It is not the friendly call from White House to refurbish bilateral relations but the burning issue of Iraq and the strategy to pull out the country from severe violence that has evoked the formal invitation.
Brushing aside their mutual differences, United States and Iran will hold their first formal talks on Monday to discuss the deteriorating situation within Iraq. US Ambassador to Iraq, Ryan Crocker was scheduled to meet in Baghdad with Iranian officials to discuss security issues.
Since the dethroning of the executed Iraqi president, Saddam Hussain, and expected rise of Shia political leadership and subsequent violence, U.S. has accused Tehran of fomenting violence in the country. US officials have accused them on numerous occasions of providing material support to militant groups responsible for attacks on American soldiers. Iran has always expressed its desire for talks and denied the US charges, despite Iranian leadership’s demands of American evac from the country.
American authorities intend to use Iranian influence among 60 per cent Shiite and their political as well as militant leadership. Crocker wants Iran to support US intention of the production of bomb materials within the country.
While deliberating on the latest US interest, state department spokesman Sean McCormack reportedly said, “We would encourage them to take positive steps to follow their rhetoric with action, in order to stop the flow of material funding, as well as technology and personnel, into Iraq that might be playing a negative role in Iraq's stability.�
The animosity between the countries has worsened since the U.S. suspects Iran of developing nuclear weapons which Iran refutes.
The relations between the two countries have worsened after Rohullah Khomainee led Islamic revolution over threw US backed Shah and led country to Islamic republic from monarchy. During same year Iranian students took over American embassy in 1979 and some American officials were taken as hostage for 444 days, thus formally ending the ties with America.
