The second edition of the Hamdard Delton Invitational Squash championship gets underway in the capital's Talimabad Squash complex here on Saturday with over 90 players including 25 from neighbouring country Pakistan participating in the meet with an initiative of engendering peace and harmony through Squash.
The four-day event will conclude on Jan 29th. This year the tournament will be played under a slightly changed format as the participation in the championship is by invitation only.
According to Delhi Squash Association (DSA), President Vijay Goel, The championship has total prize money of Rs 4.5 lakh with winners and runners-up of each category will fetch a purse of Rs 15,000 and 10,000 respectively.
The organisers have taken a unique initiative for the promotion of games across the country as no single player would go empty handed from this event, as each participant will be getting a minimum of Rs one thousand for the participation in the games.
Besides the men's section the event has boys' under-11, 13, 15, 17 and 19 categories, while for the girls, entries will be provided in under-11, 15 and women's categories.
The organisers have also invited a contingent of 25 Pakistani players in order to provide sufficient competitions to the Indians who will be coming from Mumbai, Jodhpur, Jaipur, Mayo College (Ajmer), Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata besides from a small town Dhampur of Uttarakhand.
The quarter finals are slated for January 27 followed by the semi-finals the next day and finals on January 29.
With not much of exposure in respect of other countries of the World the squash in the country has attained greater heights, with the likes of Joshna Chinappa, Ritwick Bhattacharya, Saurav Ghosal and Dipika Pallikal are putting up a great job in the domestic as well as international circuit.
The organisers have made special efforts to invite participants from across Pakistan so that our players can benefit from playing against an opposition that is better and perhaps more formidable.
In addition the interaction between players of both countries on the squash court and outside of it makes for healthy competition, camaraderie and long term relationships. The event will conclude with a social and cultural evening followed by a gala dinner.
