Ludhiana, May 19 (ANI): Despite the Punjab Government banning the burning of wheat stubble, the process continues in the state, and this is causing large scale pollution and asthmatic problems.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court had banned the burning of wheat stubble and this was followed by a similar ban order from the state government.
Farmers in Ludhiana and nearby districts are burning the wheat stubble after the harvest.
"We are aware of that it (burning of wheat stubble) is banned. It is easy to remove stubble by burning it. The other instruments like rotavators-a machine which removes stubble, are too costly that we cant purchase it. If government wants to implement the ban it should first provide the subsidy to farmers to purchase the required machinery to remove stubble," said one farmer.
Stubble burning is not only injurious to human health due to environmental hazards involved with it, the process is also harmful for farmers as several friendly pests that save crops from harmful pests, were burnt in the fire. The heat generated by the fire also diminishes the fertility of the soil by burning micro nutrients.
"Now, these days, we are getting more patients with chest releated problems as the large scale smoke causes asphyxia or asthma in patients. The number of such cases has increased these days", said Dr. Sumit Puri, the medical supritendent of the DMC Hospital.
"The burning of wheat stubble is banned and the district had issued prohibitory orders. We have already issued advisory and warnings, and if the farmers failed to ban it, the government will take action against the erring farmers under 144 CrPC," said District Commissioner Rahul Tiwari.
He said that the Pollution Control Act is also applicable against farmers violating the government ban. By Karan Kapoor (ANI)
