Washington, May 16 (ANI): US Defence Secretary Robert Gates has said his 'heart went to his mouth' as he watched from the White House 'a perfect fusion of intelligence collection, intelligence analysis, and military operations' being carried out to track down Osama bin Laden earlier this month.
On being asked what went on in his mind while watching the operation live along with President Barack Obama, and others in the White House Situation Room, CBS News quoted Gates as saying: "Well, I think like the rest, I was just transfixed. And, of course, my heart went to my mouth when the helicopter landed in the courtyard, 'cause I knew that wasn't part of the plan. But these guys were just amazing."
Gates admitted he was nervous as the operation unfolded, but admired the way it was carried out with full coordination.
"It was a perfect fusion of intelligence collection, intelligence analysis, and military operations," he added.
After the mission, Gates went to meet personally with the SEAL team, and praised them for their courageous work.
He also said he was scared whether bin Laden was actually present in the compound because they had no 'direct evidence', but was relieved that the mission was carried out as planned. (ANI)
