Palamu (Jharkhand), May 11 (ANI): Maoists blasted a lawmaker's house in the Palamu region of Jharkhand on Wednesday.
Residents said a group of 40-50 Maoists came and set off a bomb in the house of Kameshwar Baitha, a lawmaker, and took his supporters hostage.
"Maoists came and took his supporters hostage. They came at around 9. They placed a bomb in the house but it did not blast for one hour. As the bomb blasted, they started shouting slogans against Kameshwar Baitha and said all his supporters should come to their senses," said Prem, a resident.
Baitha said the Maoists wanted to create terror in the mind of locals, as they feared their cause was becoming weak.
"They are becoming weak so to create terror in the mind of locals they blasted my house, so that no body will come forward against them. They want violence and support from the locals and they are against development so they want to spread terror," said Baitha.
Baitha was arrested in 2004 on the charges of being an active member of the Maoists group and in 2009, he contested elections from jail and won from Palamu.
The ultras have spread into rural pockets of 20 of India's 28 states. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has termed the Maoists India's gravest internal security threat.
Initially, the Maoists contended they are fighting for the cause of poor and weaker sections of the society whereas over the past two decades, they have turned extremely violent, not hesitating in killing civilians on the pretext they are police informers. (ANI)
