Dinajpur (West Bengal), May 11 (ANI): The carpet industry in West Bengal's North Dinajpur District has opened new job opportunities for its residents for whom the traditional occupation of agriculture is not enough.
West Bengal's carpet industry is currently experiencing a boom.
"People living here are dependent on agriculture. But now, people are getting involved in the carpet business. Around 400 people of this area are working as carpet weavers now," said Abu Taher, a carpet loom owner.
There are around 36 looms that have come up in Dinajpur District alone, where weavers earn around 200 rupees a day.
The major carpet importing countries are the United States, the United Kingdom and Europe.
The United States alone imports almost 50 percent of India's total carpet exports. It is followed by the UK, which imports 30 percent, and Europe, Gulf countries, South Africa and South America account for the remaining Indian carpet exports. (ANI)
