Anand arrives at third place in Corus, Carlsen, Kramnik lose

Reigning World champion and India’s numero uno player Viswanathan Anand settled out for a quick draw with Israeli Boris Gelfand to arrive at the joint third place after his ninth round meeting at the 70th Corus International Chess tournament in Wijk Aan Zee (Netherlands) on Wednesday.

The biggest upset of the day occurred when leader Magnus Carlsen of Norway lost his ninth round encounter to Hungarian Peter Leko. In another major turnaround Bulgarian Veselin Topalov played an amazing game to beat Russian Vladimir Kramnik from a Semi Slav defense game.

Leko shocked overnight leader and left the tournament wide-open withy anyone can give a shy, with just four rounds remain in the category-20 tournament, to get hold of the elusive title.

Levon Aronian of Armenia joined Carlsen on the top with 5.5 points. The draw took Anand's tally to five points. He is half a point behind Carlsen and Lev Aronian. Anand shares the third spot with Teimour Radjabov, Michael Adams and Vladimir Kramnik in the elite Group A.

The Indian ace faced no trouble at all in holding Gelfand with black. In the group’B’, another duo of Indian Grandmasters' played safely as Koneru Humpy and P Harikrishna ended their tie in a draw.

After this draw, Harikrishna retains his joint fourth spot on 5 points as Sergei Movsesian of Slovakia retained sole lead after drawing with Nigel Short of England. Etienne Bacrot of France holds second place on 6 as Movsesian is on top with 6.5 points, while Nigel Short is placed on third with another half point adrift.

Teenage Indian Grandmaster Parimarjan Negi held to a draw by Dutch Mark van der Werf in the Group 'C' while Italy’s Fabiano Caruana got stranglehold of his position to the top of the table in this group after he defeated John van der Wiel of Holland.

The Italian teenager took his tally to 7 points out of a possible 9 and is half point ahead of Dutch GM Dmitry Reinderman. Parimarjan is placed joint third along with Friso Nijboer of Holland on 5.5 points.
