Kathmandu , Wed, 20 Apr 2011 ANI

Kathmandu, Apr 20 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S M Krishna, who arrived here on a three-day official visit on Wednesday, said that India is committed to working for a democratic and peaceful Nepal.

In a statement, Krishna said: "I would like to convey to the leadership of Nepal that India is committed to working with the people of Nepal for a democratic, stable, peaceful and prosperous Nepal."

"I will be conveying the greetings and best wishes of our leadership and the people of India to them and exchange views with them on issues of mutual interest, including on how to deepen and expand our multi-faceted relations," he added.

Emphasising that it has been India's endeavor to strengthen economic cooperation with Nepal, Krishna said: "I am confident that my visit would help further strengthen and expand our bilateral relations and open more avenues for mutual cooperation.

"Relations with Nepal are and will continue to be a matter of the highest priority for India," he added.

He further said: "I will be visiting Birgunj to lay the foundation stone of the Integrated Check Post and the Terai Roads Project. We believe that these projects would facilitate Nepal's international trade and economic development."

This is Krishna's second visit to Nepal after becoming External Affairs Minister.

He is scheduled to meet President Ram Baran Yadav, Prime Minister Jhalanath Khanal, Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Bharat Mohan Adhikari and other political leaders.

Krishna will also visit Birgunj to lay the foundation stone of the Terai Roads Project and of the Integrated Check Post, which are being constructed with Indian cooperation.

The visit, which was initially planned in March soon after Khanal was sworn in, was postponed due to the delay in the formation of Nepal Cabinet. (ANI)
