New Delhi, Apr 16 (ANI): Government on Saturday reiterated its commitment to introduce a strong Lok Pal Bill in the monsoon session of the Parliament.
Briefing media after the meeting of Joint Government-Civil Society Committee for drafting the anti-graft Lokpal Bill, Telecom Minister Kapil Sibal said that both the government and the civil society representatives exchanged views on the salient features of the proposed bill.
"The meeting was fruitful, everyone made valuable contribution. We all want the Bill to be introduced in the Monsoon Session," he added.
When asked about videographing of the procedures of joint committee to draft the Bill meeting, Sibal said, audio recording was conducted for today's meeting and same course will be followed for the future meetings also.
Meanwhile, expressing satisfaction over the meeting, Prashant Bhusan, one of the members in the panel from the civil society side, hoped that this would lead to an independent Lok Pal in the country to fight corruption at higher places.
He said, though the demand for videographing of the proceedings was not accepted, the audio recordings about important decisions reached in the meetings will be shared with the public for wider consultations.
He said, the next meeting would take up issues related to the bill after studying the drafts exchanged today.
Chaired by Union Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, the meeting was held at the North Block.
Other government representatives on the panel include Home Minister P Chidambaram, Law Minister Veerappa Moily and Resources Minister Salman Khursheed.
Five representatives of civil society who will work with the five ministers to draft the Jan Lokpal Bill (Citizen's Ombudsman bill) include Shanti Bhushan, Anna Hazare, eminent lawyer Prashant Bhushan, Karnataka Lokayukta Santosh Hege and RTI activist Arvind Kejriwal.
The meeting came amid a controversy over a CD allegedly involving eminent lawyer and the panel co-chairman Shanti Bhushan. (ANI)
