Guwahati, Apr 12 (ANI): A Bihu dance training camp was recently held here to promote and preserve the traditions of Assam.

Not only Assamese, but youth from Bihar, Bengal, Nagaland and Manipur were among the 600 odd strong crowd that came to Silpigram to learn the Bihu dance.

Organised by the Ministry of External Affairs in association with the Indian Council For Cultural Relations, Northeast Zone Cultural and the Assam Sanskrit Mancha, the ten-day workshop dealt with the intricacies of the traditional Bihu dance.

The main focus was not on promoting the Bihu festival but also on teaching the young generation the right way to perform the dance.

"Bihu is popular all over the world. But now a days many young people are performing it the wrong way. So what we have done here is that we have brought all the Bihu dancers and maestros together on the same platform. There are more than 400 girls from Assam and other states," said Deepjyoti Hazarika, an organiser .

Earlier, the dance was restricted to the paddy fields, but now it is performed all over the state. It has now gained recognition all over the world.

"Bihu will go a long way, as there are many participants from the northeastern states also. Once they learn the dance form, they will go back and teach their friends in their states. As we know that the medium of cultural exchange is through propagating ones culture to others, this workshop will help us in promoting our culture, said Drimly Gogoi, a trainer.

Such workshops play an important role in helping young Assamese, who are gradually losing contact with their culture, connect with their roots. (ANI)
