Prime Minister Gordon Brown while praising Sachin Tendulkar for his contribution in the world of sport hinted his keenness for a knighthood honour to be conferred to the little master blaster.
He congratulated Team India for their exuberant victory over Australia in Perth, India created history over winning the Test match which is one of the greatest win in Test match history. Also India halted Aussies 16 consecutive victory in the Test.
Brown said, “Sachin Tendulkar is one of the great cricketers...it is not for me to decide honours which is a matter for the independent honours committee.”
“I’m sure just as people recognise Don Bradman and others who were awarded the honours, there is a strong case for those who make a huge contribution to the world of sports” sounded clear in his support for Tendulkar.
“It used to be the case that great cricketers from the Commonwealth would be recognised by the British people through our honoured system—we think of Sir Don Bradman or Sir Gary Sobers,” Brown added.
“But I believe it was a good tradition to celebrate the achievements of the great Commonwealth cricketers — it shows we are good sports and I would like to see some of the great players of the modern era — like Sachin Tendulkar — proposed for Honorary Awards — so the British nation can salute their achievements in one of our national sports,” Brown said.
Sachin with almost all the cricket records in his name remain the favourite of many for his batting style. Truly if conferred knighthood it will add to the class of Tendulkar.
India is trailing 2-1 in the four-Test series in Australia; the final match will be played at Adelaide from Thursday.
The British Prime Minister was in India for his two day visit to discuss expanding trade and investment, problems confronting terrorism, economic cooperation and on cooperation in controlling climate change between the two commonwealth nations.
