Amritsar, Mar.25 (ANI): Devotees in Amritsar offered liquor at the shrine of a Muslim seer Baba Rode Shah during a three-day annual fair, which began on Wednesday..
During the course of the fair, devotees visit the shrine with liquor offerings meant for the saint to fulfill their wishes.
Patar Singh, a devotee said: " We have been coming here for many years now. Devotees make wishes here. Childless people also wish for children here. Even when someone wants to purchase something new, they come here to wish for it and their wishes get fulfilled."
As part of the ritual, the devotees bring bottles, pouches and buckets containing a heady cocktail of drinks, ranging from cheap country-made liquor to foreign brands as part of the offerings. The alcohol is later distributed among the devotees.
According to legend, Rode Shah was a seer who undertook penance for a long period. He is said to have possessed mystical powers and could cure ailments.
It is said that in 1896 a devotee offered liquor to the saint in gratitude for fulfilling his wish, which was later distributed among his disciples and has became a tradition ever since. (ANI)
