No election fever in Assam yet

Guwahati, Wed, 23 Mar 2011 ANI

Guwahati, Mar.23 (ANI): The Assembly election in Guwahati is yet to gain momentum among the urban population here.

Earlier, elections were celebrated like festivals in the city, but now the posters and advertisements do not influence the people who want concrete action from the candidates.

Jitu Barman, a local said: " Right now the condition is damp but since it's the election season, people may get excited about it. People have begun to get excited in Guwahati and I hope people in rural areas will also get into the spirit."

" Most of the people in the city say they are not bothered about the election, even though party workers are doing their best to publicise their candidates," he added.

Abdul Chaudhary, an artist who has been engaged in making posters, billboards and cutouts of political leaders since the last 25 years, said that business was not going well this year, as voters are not fooled by empty promises of the political leaders.

This year, Assam will hold two-phase elections in which 62 constituencies will go to polls on April 4, while the remaining 64 constituencies will vote on April 11.

The Election Commission has stated that 23813 polling booths are being set up for the state's 18 million electorates.

Currently, the Congress party rules the state. (ANI)
