Bangalore, Mar. 3 (ANI): Actress and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) vice-president Hema Malini was on Thursday formally elected to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka.
Her victory was preordained because of the BJP's strength in the Karnataka Assembly.
In all, 106 MLAs voted for her, while 94 didn't.
When she filed her nomination nearly a week ago, Hema Malini declared her net worth as being over Rs. 35 crore. Her assets include four houses in Mumbai and four cars, besides an impressive Bollywood bio-data.
Accompanied by Karnataka Chief Minister B.S. Yeddyurappa, State BJP president K.S. Eshwarappa and Ministers, the 62-year-old actress had filed her nomination papers before Returning Officer and Secretary of the Legislative Assembly S.B. Patil at the State secretariat on February 21.
Hema Malini was a surprise choice for the seat and her nomination by the central party leadership had led to heart burn among a section of the BJP in the State, who saw her as an "outsider".
At the time of her nomination, the actress had said that "Happiness and unhappiness go hand in hand. I have been associated with Karnataka for so many years as an artiste. Other partymen are bound to get a chance sometime later."
Chief Minister Yeddyurappa had then expressed happiness over the candidature of Hema Malini, terming it a "victory for women". (ANI)
